Downtown Stores

by Perry Hamburg

I have great memories of the downtown stores in their heyday. Bamberger's and Kresge's with their luxurious, manned elevators that, as youngsters, we loved to ride up and down on Saturdays to our hearts' content. Davega sporting goods which sold top-quality all-leather baseball gloves for $4.99.

The second-hand booksellers on Broad Street across from Washington Park, the mens' clothing stores on lower Market Street whose owners/salesman stood outside and acted like carnival barkers to attract male passersby, the clothing and furniture stores along Springfield Avenue that were so busy on Friday night. The art supply dealers on upper Halsey Street that resembled Greenwich Village, etc.
