Yellow Taxi Cab Company

by Winnie McCormick

My father , James J. Hesson, Jr. told the story that during the Depression, he tried to get a job at the Yellow Taxi Cab Company. They wouldn't hire him because he had red hair and everyone knows red heads have a temper, so my dad took shoe polish and blackened his hair. He was hired. However, the polish wore off and he was fired. Couldn't get away with that today! (The Hessons and the Boyles lived in Newark around 1910 on)
